I had to put this on hold for a while, but I got it wrapped up this week and took some photos. I am not happy with the pictures but since I am leaving on a jet plane in a few hours, I think they will have to do.

I'm down to the last steps on this one. It's been a fun journey. I've worked on this one with almost no pre-plans, and I'm pleased with the result. Binding, a few sparkles for accent and I'll be ready!

I have begun and the image is very clear, but time may not be available I will have to see. I am going to finish this Iris and it may only be one in a series from blocks I am working with right now! Doing a few pentagon kaleidoscopes, my recent obsession and a couple fusible web grid blocks based on traditional iris' blocks, to achieve the great size I want. There will also be a bit of fused raw edge applique of iris images from another piece of fabric in my 'iris' collection!

I need to make a few hangings and get on with it. I have been collecting these fabrics for several years. Thinking traditional bed sized contemporary quilts when I bought the yardage! Way more coordinating fabric than was needed but now will have a much appreciated place in my general stash! Does anyone else save 'collections' of fabrics until they make 'something' with them? I like to.

I had every intention of completing this challenge---but where did the time go?
How many people are finished? Is there any way the deadline can be extended? Would it be possible to set up a regular yahoo email group?
If the date is still the 15th, I have to jump ship. School started this past Tuesday and I have a frighteningly hormonal teenaged daughter to deal with.

Done!! 2 Echinacea Quilts!

Well, I finally got in the quilting groove, and ignored everything else Labor Day, and the days since. We had no plans, Monday, so my husband did yard work, and I hid in my studio and worked with my Echinaceas. My first idea of combining photos and sunprints didn't want to work, so I ended up making 2 at the same time. One using sunprints, and one with the photos. I had played with a layout for the photos, and decided to fill in with fused crazy patch which I have been using a lot this year (a great way to use up small bits and pieces). I will be posting the process for that on my blog, along with the steps to the finished products.

Here are the final results:

"Echinacea Collage" with a detail shot. The photos are edged with black and gold yarn couched around them. The crazy patch areas are quilted with a variegated thread with leaves and Echinacea flowers. The border fabric is one I painted last summer, and ended up perfectly matching the peachy orange flowers.
The size is 23"x26 1/2".

"Echinaceas and Butterflies" (20 1/2"x30 1/2") and it's detail shot. I cut apart echinacea flowers to do the sunprints of them with ferns. My first idea was to just have quilting with variegated tread in the crazy patch areas, but when I got it "done", it needed something. I then pulled out my butterfly cutouts, and added some that I overpainted with sparkle paint to soften the colors and coordinate with the sparkle in the fabric used in the sunprints and border. I had also originally planned to use a different thread for the quilting in the crazy patch areas, but it was too bright and had too much blue and green for this piece, I wanted more of the dusty purples, but didn't have that. I may have to tame my butterfly wings with a stitch or 2. Right now, they are only stitched on at the bodies, but the wings aren't behaving. I used a shimmery organza on the backs of them, if it showed some when they "flapped" but they have a mind of their own, so a stitch or so may help to keep them where I want them. Snapdragon challenge quilt

Ok I finished and posted a copy to the yahoo group but I think some people cannot access it so I am posting copies of it here as well. I think my overall pic is too dark (but my monitor is about 25 years old!!) My sister said she thought so until she clicked on it and then she said it looked fine. I have also added three closeup shots for the various parts near the top. So here goes . . .

I have now taken the test three times. 1st I was a daisy. Then I was a morning glory. And then the last time around and echinachia.

I am pretty sure that the answers were exactly the same the 2nd two times.

So now, I am going to guess I shall have to just come up with something like

I am a Hydrangea!

I came out of the quiz as a ....... Hydrangea!!!!
"You are just a little bit of a show off and like to prove just what you can do. Every time someone double-dog-dared you, you proved that not only could you do it, but you could do it with style."

And I was not that surprised... Hydrangea's have been leading in my art since I started embroidering.
I won an award with my freestanding vase with hydrangea's....The European Bernina embroiderer of the year 2006

I am just about to finish a quilt for another challenge... With a hydrangea...

Today it was the day I have started my piece for this challenge.
I have started painting,trying to depict a lilac hydrangea in my garden.
Don't know yet what will be the next step...

Some Echinacea Inspiration

I'm not sure if I am the only Echinacea in the challenge or not, but here are some photos of mine that are in bloom now in an assortment of colors.

I have had seedlings coming up in all shades of deep to pale lavender and pink. I started out with the purple and white ones. The named varieties I planted when we had our greenhouse, and offered them for sale. I lost my yellow and original orange ones, but am really enjoying the varieties I have. (I don't usually allow many orange flowers in my gardens)

In order of appearance: "Harvest Moon"- Pale apricot; "Sundown"- Orange tinged purple; "Sparkler"- Purple flower, variegated leaves; Next 3 Photos- Echinacea purpurea seedlings; "Hope"- Large centered pale lavender- developed to raise $ for breast cancer research; Last but not least- a pale lavender pink seedling. Not open yet- "Double Decker"- extra layer of petals from the center of the flower. My white has had only one flower that the bugs got before I could photograph.

My quilt will probably have many of these photos in it, or some part of them- Ideas are still swimming around.

A nice variety for a pleasant garden! It will be fun to see all the individuality we will express! I have enjoyed the flower quilts posted from a previous flower challenge! I am amazed by the 'wondrous variety" of our creative expressions!
Still brainstorming on the iris in my future! Obviously I didn't post a pic yet, I get wrapped up in life and some things have to give up their place in line!

Inspiration!

I've been moving around my sewing "studio" space today from the dining room/kitchen area to my bedroom. I get too distracted in the main living area in the house (DH, four kids, three cats, two dogs). While moving stuff I had to stop and look at some of my art books. Mucha is a favorite of mine. When I first tested as a Nigella and I saw what they look like, I was reminded of Elizabethan collars. So after seeing the Mucha book, I'm going to do a queen with Nigella petals around her neck and a pod as a sceptor in a Mucha style.
Now if I could only be as inspired for the Symbols of Your Culture challenge.

My name is Diane R and I took the quiz and found out what I already knew - I am a SUNFLOWER. To me, sunflowers perpetually make you happy. You can't help but smile when you see a field of those sun kissed beautiesl I just dyed some fabric, attempting to come close to "Mother Nature's" perfect blend of yellows. Sunflowers are nature's true sun worshipers. Have you ever noticed, a whole field of sunflowers will always be facing the sun, As the day does on and the sun changes position, they move their faces right along. I can't wait to get started.

P.S. Thank you for all the instructions on how to post to this blog. Someone worked really hard putting it all this together, and their work it appreciated.

Snapdragon and violet

I had the same thing as Penny. Did the test on different days and ended up being these 2 flowers. I feel more like a violet so that is the flower I have choosen to be my inspiration for the quilt. Fabric for the background has been dyed so I am ready to start working on it.

Well I don't really MEAN "old flower", but I haven't yet decided what floer to do, the flower quiz notwithstanding! I like poppies and peonies because , like me, they are blatantly in your face and kind of loud. On the other hand, as a symbol, I like bleeding hearts and daffodils. Hmmm, in ther meanwhile I CAN post a pic of another flower quilt from days gone by.... It's called MICROGARDEN...about how kids see all the smaller things in the back yard.

I took the flower survey but was working on Gelatin plates of Clematis at the time. When I looked up language of Clematis I found "artful" so that was that, so here's my start. Just getting into monotype prints...way too much fun!

I took the quiz at two different times, in two very different moods. Maybe I'm a violet by day and a snapdragon by night? I'm going to have to ponder that one. What's odd is that the only thing I've ever encountered that makes me wheeze is a snapdragon. Just goes to show what I've known all along - sometimes I can be my own worst enemy. I just hope I can create something by September 15!

I tested to be a snapdragon as well. Immediately the imagery started flowing around verbally snapping and breathing fire............I must have been in a strange mood?! Not sure I'm going to run with that imagery, but I'm playing around with it.

I have a collection of iris fabric from the past 15 years! I am looking forward to putting some of it to use. We will be able to post pictures here eventually right? Thought I would pull out all my fabric and take an inspiration shot, perhaps tomorrow.

I just wanted to introduce myself to all of you challengers. My name is Brigitte and I live in South Louisiana. I have been a member of the Quilt Art list for quite some time but I must admit that I am a lurker. When I read the call for the Flower Power Challenge I decided it was a good time to come out of the shadows. I love flower quilts.

I answered the questionnaire and was told that I am a daffodil. I will probably not be doing this flower because I am not real fond of them nor am I very fond of yellow. Not quite sure what it will be.

However, I am pleased to meet all of you and look forward to reading your posts and seeing your finished pieces.

I am a flower that I had never heard of called Nigella. It's also called "Love in a Mist" or "Devil in the Bush". I really SHOULD do a poppy since I adore them and my official studio name is Painted Poppy Studio.Hmmm---gosh, Pamela, I didn't think of cheating! LOL

Wow - another opportunity to be a Flower Child since I'm never going to become a Flower Adult.

Since Pamela posted her In Full Bloom entry I decided to add mine too. It is called "Late Bloomer" and is really a picture of the flower that I am. But I will try to pick a REAL flower for our challenge. Looking forward to seeing everyone's work.

Hello Flowers-
I took the quiz & came out as Hydrangea, Snapdragon, Rose, Echinachea & something else I can't remember. I did love the perfume quiz Annie gave the link to. That was spot on, even down to my own birthstone & a favorite. My baby girl's, ok she's a cat but my baby all the same, her full name is Tigerlily or Lily for short. I may do something around that if it's allowed.

Cathy, I love your Canna, double chins & all, I can really relate to that.

This still needs quilting and binding but otherwise it is done. The title, which I may write in the top border, is continued on the quilt itself, "there is nothing I "canna" do". Yep, I am a canna! Funny thing about this quilt, I had started drawing it out as soon as I took the quiz so had it already to go when the challenge was issued. Oh, in case you're wondering that IS my face, double chin and all! LOL

Flower Power Challenge Guidelines

This is a QuiltArt List challenge. If you are not currently a member of the QuiltArt List, go to www.QuiltArt.com and sign up. Then go to the website:

Do the questionnaire to discover what kind of flower you are.

Thus inspired, make a quilt anywhere from 18" minimum to 48" maximum, with any of the sizes between these two in any direction, i.e. 20" x 46", etc. Your piece can be square, round, triangular, etc. It is up to you. You can even make a handbag or other wearable (and those don't have to fit in the 18" to 48" category because they aren't quilts), or you can even make an art doll if you choose, or perhaps an altered book or other art form.

Deadline will be Sept. 15, and then you are going to send your jpgs to Judy Smith at judy@quilt.net and also to me and Judy will get them up on the site. After we see if we have enough quilts, I might even get us some fun nontraditional venues like the big botanical garden right up the street from me. We'll see.
